Here are a couple of things to see and do around Naurns.
In -> Naturns’s immediate surroundings you will find many wonderful mountain valleys which are typical of this area (Suldental, Passeier Tal, Schnalstal etc.) and ideal for day-trips and excursions.
is more than just a castle: it represents a synthesis of the arts which dominates the village of Naturns. It is a castle, a museum, a wine-growing estate, an organic farm, an inn serving home-produced wine, ... ”A vision and yet a reality” as Reinhold Messner, the castle’s owner, says. “Protecting and tending the mountains, their wildlife and nature, as well as the cultural heritage from all over the world”, this is Reinhold Messner’s vision which has become a reality on this towering rock (at about 1000 m) rich in history, between the Vinschgau and Schnalstal valleys, between vineyards and glaciers. Thanks to all this, Schloss Juval is a cut above the rest in one of Europe’s richest regions in terms of castles and manor-houses.
From the Himalayas to Africa
It is always worth visiting Schloss Juval, Reinhold Messner’s summer residence. The castle has been renovated in an exemplary way and is open to the public. You can visit the courtyards with cedars from the Himalayas and also a dozen rooms. There you can find a number of historical paintings, frescoes, a gallery with paintings focusing on alpine and climbing topics, a collection of masks and much more besides.
The -> ArcheoParc Schnals lies 1,500 m above sea level in Unser Frau im Schnalstal,
about 20 minutes’ drive from Naturns. This archaeological park is a unique active museum, where it is possible to relive the past and understand, by means of first-hand experience, how Ötzi and his contemporaries used to live.
The Burggrafenamt (as is -> Meraner Land’s other designation) is not only the oldest and most classic holiday resort in South Tyrol, but it is also the heart of the Tyrol from the point of view of history. This is moreover the area featuring the highest density of castles and manor-houses in the whole of Europe.
The botanical garden of -> Schloss Trauttmansdorff situated above Meran was opened to the public recently. In each season it offers stunning views and memorable impressions of the diversity of nature: Forests of the World, Sun Gardens, Orchid House, Succulents in Semi-Deserts, Water and Terraced Gardens, the “living” clock made of flowers, Empress “Sisi”-Promenade and much more besides.
Only 20 minutes’ drive from Naturns it offers a unique day-trip amid adorable plant life.
15 minutes’ drive form Naturns lies the famous spa town of -> Meran. Thanks to its mild climate it has held great attraction for numerous spa guests from all over the world for many decades. Meran’s surroundings are characterised by a great number
of castles, manor-houses, fortresses and other sights and places of cultural interest, which are certainly worth a visit.
The entrance of Schnalstal is right behind the village of Naturns. This traditional valley is also called the “valley of the larches”, since its slopes are covered with beautiful larch woods. Here you can still find many idyllic farmhouses made of timber. This is also the place where “Ötzi”, the famous glacier mummy, was found ten years ago. Those who are physically fit can visit the place where he was found on a 6-7-hour excursion. Schnalstal is also widely known for its glacier, a marvellous year-round skiing area located at more than 3,000 m above sea level. The Schnalstal ski resort is half an hour’s drive from Naturns.
The capital of our province is only half an hour’s drive from Naturns. The South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology in -> Bozen documents South Tyrol’s prehistory and early history covering the period from the end of the last Ice Age (15,000 B.C.) to Carolingian times (800 A.D.). One of the chief attractions of the museum is Ötzi, the world-famous Iceman, who is preserved in a specially designed new type of cold storage chamber.
The “Realm of the pale mountains” is fabulous. The road of the Dolomites leads past the prettiest places and most stunning views in the Dolomites and is an integral part, if not the highlight, of a holiday in South Tyrol.
-> Lake Garda is less than two hours’ drive (150 km) from Naturns. An ideal destination for a day-trip in our Barchetta cabriolet.
The Arena of -> Verona is undoubtedly one of the most famous amphitheatres in the world. Performances, such as Aida, Nabucco, Carmen and the like, are staged weekly from mid-June to the end of August. Verona is a 2-hour drive from Naturns (180 km).
The wealth of this commercial city in times past is inconceivable. Countless buildings,
palaces, churches and bridges are still a testimony to Venice’s one-time affluence. Its many canals and its distinctive romantic air, make Venice always worth a visit. -> Venice is only 3 hours’ drive (294 km) from Naturns, so it is ideal for a day-trip.
